History of Warren County, Iowa:
Mr. John M. laverty, one of the pioneers of this county, was born in
Northumberland County, PA on the 21 of Dec 1792 and was the youngest of
seven children, but one of whom survivied him. His father died in his
boyhood and his mother removed overland to Pickaway County, Ohio. During
the war of 1812 he twice entered the Federal Serice first during the
spring of 1813 for 6 months and afterward as a volunteer. He was
stationed at Sandusky, Detroit and in Canada.
At end of his term, he returned to Pickaway County where he continued to
reside with and cared for his mother. Her residence was near the present
city of Columbus, then a desolate region without a building or other
visisble mark of civilization.
In 1818 he removed to Indiana and assisted in the erection of the first
frame building in the city of Terre Haute. About this time he was married
to Miss Nancy McNutt with whom he live happily until 1860 when she
departed this life after a brief but painful illness.
He continued to live in Indiana until 1848 when he removed to this county
and settled on a farm about 5 miles NE of Indianola. In 1861 he married
Electa Miller of Palmyra, of this county. He died at the home of his
adopted daughter, Mrs. Dr. Fisk of Indianola. He had only one child,
James Laverty. He was a member of the Methodist Church for 40 years.

Ewing McNutt owned the following property, which was sold during probate:
the East half of the South Easst quarter of section 27 in Township 18
north of Range 9 West situate in the county of Fountain Indiana; this
land was sold to John Laverty by order of the court during
