Note for: Archibald Alexander SPROUL, 29 APR 1831 - 17 AUG 1899 Index
Note: [McNutt7.FTW]
Archibald was born at Locust Grove, the 5th child and second son to John
and Matilda. He served in the cavalry during the Civil War. Family
history suggests he was at home during the summers months to grow food
for the Army but that would have ended with Sheridan's Campaign in 1864.
His older brother, William, his sister Matilda, his son James and four
slaves died that summer from typhoid, contracted from two Union soldiers
who were cared for at Locust Grove. Archibald was paroled at Appomattox
so he must have been with the Army of Northern Virginia during that last
winter of the war. He returned to the farm as destitute as the rest of
Virginia but by hard work brought prosperity back.
