Note:   Alexander's Family in Euorpe " Robert Alexander was born at "Manor
Cunningham" Londonderry, Ireland in 1719. His wife was Esther Beard of
Pennsylvania. Robert Alexander was educated at the Universities of Dublin
and Edinburg and was bringing his library to America but owing to a storm
at sea he was obliged to throw it overboard, however, he was so will
versed in classics that he wrote many of them out in long hand from
memory an taught from there until he could obtain others. The first
classical school to be taught west of the Alleghany mountains was started
by Robert Alexander. It was first started as a private school near
Lexington, VA. in 1749. Later it was enlarged and called Liberty Hall
Academy. From that small beginning has come Washington and Lee University.

"Two of William's sons, Robert and Archibald, accompanied by his wife,
Margaret, and dau., Elizabeth, arrived at Philadelphia and gave "proof of
importation" in 1736. They settled along the bank of the Schulykill River
at Nottingham, Chester Co., near Philadelphia. While there, Robert m.
Esther Beard. Both families remained at Nottingham for abt ten years
before removing to the Scotch-Irish settlements in Augusta Co., VA.

1747: Robert Alexander sued the adminstrators of James McNutt for
"schooling" McNutt's children. Virginia Vital Records #1, p. 722.

1749: Augusta Co, VA, 22 Aug, Thomas Beard's bond as administrator of
James McNutt, with sureties Thos. Beard, James Buchanan, David Stuart.

23 May, 1751. James McNutt's orphans. Settlement by Thos. Beard,
administrator. Paid Mr. Burden for 185 acres bought by my wife (Thos.
Beard's?) now, but before marriage. 17--- to Mr. Burden quit rents on 85
acres for 10 years. 1747 to Mr. Downs for quit rents. 1744 to Mr. Burden
for quit rents, 300 acres. December 20th, 1748, paid David Hays rents
debt due before marriage. Paid Wm. Nutt debt. 8th May, 1749, paid Wm.
Hunter for work. 4th February, 1747, paid J ohn Huston, debt. 9th
December, 1748, paid John Roseman. debt. I Oth May, 1748, paid Sarnl.
Wilson, for bringing some linen from Penna. Paid to Widow Sheals, a debt.
Paid to Robt. Alexander, for schooling James and Robert McNutt. Paid to
James Dobbins, for schooling Alex. McNutt. Paid one new Bible, for Alex.
McNutt. Paid one new Testament, for James McNutt. Paid one new spelling
